DOT 5 Silicone brake fluid, Restom®SBF-L 490, does not absorb moisture. The brake systems are therefore protected against rust, which builds up in the wheel cylinders and destroys the calipers after a few brake applications when the car is restarted in the spring.
Using Restom®SBF-L 490 costs less than replacing a single wheel cylinder, even on a popular car!
Characteristics :
DOT 5 brake fluid, Restom®SBF-L 490, is hydrophobic (does not absorb water) and thus protects your braking system against rust.
A DOT 5 brake fluid (not to be confused with DOT 5.1) is perfectly suited to replace a DOT 4 or DOT 3, because the higher the number, the better the performance.
DOT = American Transportation Standard (Department Of Transportation), with the following classes:
DOT5 = boiling temperature 260 °C
DOT4 = boiling temperature 240 °C
DOT3 = boiling temperature 230 °C
WARNING: the standard does not take into account the chemical nature of the liquid.
The usual fluids, based on glycols, are moisture-absorbing products, hence the manufacturers' recommendation to dispose of the system every 2 years. The absorption takes place mainly at the level of the openings (wheel cylinders, brake calipers). Thus, on an old vehicle that can be parked for many months, rust will develop at this level, with the known consequences: blocked brakes, or worse, total loss of brakes due to leakage.
Although the addition of Restom®SBF-L 490 in a circuit that is already filled with traditional fluid does not damage the brake and can be used to solve problems, the circuit must be perfectly vented before the introduction of Restom®SBF-L 490. After all, the residues of traditional fluid are denser than Silicone. They can be found on the wheels and will therefore continue to rust.
